Food security is a key focus of Nanaimo Community Kitchens. We work to ensure that members of our community have dignified access to affordable, good-quality, and nutritious food. Factors such as globalization, rising real estate costs, and income disparity have created challenges in maintaining food security. As people lose the ability and skills to grow and prepare their own food, they become dependent on distant suppliers, out-of-season produce, and processed foods, compromising the quality and security of their food sources.
We address these issues by providing programs that build food preparation skills among participants. By learning how to cook and prepare meals, individuals can regain control over their food sources and make healthier choices. Our organization believes that by cooking together, we can not only feed individuals and families but also strengthen the overall community. We aim to combat the loss of basic cooking skills from generation to generation and empower individuals to take charge of their own food security.
